Sam Katz's comments in today's Metro didn't go unnoticed from Chaka Fattah's campaign. Fattah called Katz out for his "introduction of race into this campaign." A release from Fattah's camp says the congressman respects Katz but that his remarks on Fattah's transportation plan are "inappropriate."
Katz said that Fattah's proposal to tax drivers coming into Center City to pay for SEPTA is an an idea that "goes over well in the neighborhoods of West Philadelphia and North Philadelphia. But it's a disaster for Philadephia and compltely unnecessary. And it's a racially divisive policy."
Fattah responds:
"Improving the region's mass transit system has nothing to do with race. President Bush offered $100 million to cities in his budget to examine congestion. I believe we should use that money to study the matter."
